The Indian government is considering ways to ensure that the status of the chief election commissioner remains equivalent to that of Supreme Court judges in a new bill before Parliament. The discussions are aimed at preventing any perception of downgrading the Election Commission’s (EC) stature. The bill has attracted controversy due to a clause stating that the salary and allowances of the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners should be the same as those of the Cabinet Secretary, rather than a Supreme Court judge.
