Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has stated that the state is currently unable to release Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu due to insufficient rainfall in the river basin. He has requested the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to allow Karnataka to at least save water for drinking purposes. The CWMA had previously directed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusec water daily to Tamil Nadu, but the state is now facing water scarcity. Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court to direct Karnataka to release water for standing crops.
